In 2019, the band Coldplay – one of the biggest world tours present day vowed never to tour again unless they came up with an idea to tour sustainably. 3 years later the amazement of fans the band indeed came up with ways to increase sustainability on their tours by about 59%.
They have implemented the use of power bikes, and kinetic dance floors for everyone who’s arrived by foot, bike, ride share, or public transport; everyone who’s come with refillable water bottles or returned their LED wristband for recycling; and everyone who’s bought a ticket. They have planted 7 million trees so far.
In the years 2022 and 2023 there was an overall 59% reduction in direct CO2e emissions. Approximately 10,000 hectares of land were restored across 24 countries and 48 planting projects. The concert fully functions on solar energy generated by 100% solar panels in every concert. They have a partnership with 23 green-level travel providers to help fans travel to shows via super-low carbon transport.
72% of all tour waste is diverted from landfills and sent for reuse, recycling, and composting. 100% of shows with free water refill stations for fans. The Music of The Spheres world tour proudly supports charities & Good Causes.
The band has set a great example not just for fans but also for competition. Their initiatives toward sustainability are something to remember and are one for the history books.
Coldplay, one of the world’s biggest bands, is ready to take the stage in Mumbai, India in the coming January of 2025. The ticket sales took place on 22nd September 2024 at noon but to the amazement of yearning fans, the two shows sold out within an hour. Controversy has it that a huge chunk of the tickets are being black-marketed. Ironically, a band that has introduced the culture of sustainably touring is now unintentionally a part of a cycle that is unethical and far from sustainable.
