Canada’s first free grocery store opens in Saskatchewan

August 19, 2024

In Saskatchewan, Canada’s first free grocery store is all set to open to provide for the community and help as a food bank.

The main idea behind introducing this free grocery store is to remain stocked like any other grocery store as usual. It shall have a produce section; it shall have fridges that display products and will remain open all week. This store is located at 1881 Broad St. in Regina

You may be wondering why this activity isn’t carried out as usual in the church or the community centers. The Regina Food Bank believes that allowing people who rely on the food bank, to fill their cart out like a normal store, helps the store with giving back agency, and may help reduce waste. This belief led to the start of Canada’s first free grocery store.

Regina Food Bank vice-president David Froh told CBC news. “When you give choices, you give not just dignity, but actually, we figure we can feed about 25% more people.”

The stock is produced, grown, and processed in Saskatchewan. Regina Food Bank’s goal is to improve the sustainability and nutritional quality of the food their clients rely on.
