In the bustling streets of South Delhi, amidst the relentless summer heat, one man’s quiet revolution is making a significant impact. Mr. Alag Natarajan, affectionately known as the Matka Man, has dedicated his life to ensuring that no one in his community goes thirsty. Through his simple yet profound initiative of placing earthen pots (matkas) filled with clean drinking water in public spaces, he has become a beacon of compassion and selfless service.
A Journey from London to Delhi
Born and raised in Bangalore, Alag’s early life took him to London, where he spent over four decades running a souvenir shop. “My life took a pivotal turn when I was diagnosed with intestinal cancer. After battling and overcoming the disease, I returned to India, seeking a purpose beyond business,” said Alag. His journey led him to Delhi, where he began engaging in various charitable activities, including volunteering at an orphanage, assisting in a last-stage cancer hospice, serving langar (free meals) to the homeless in Chandni Chowk, and even performing dignified cremations for destitute individuals. “In 2014, moved by the plight of people suffering from the scorching heat and lack of access to clean drinking water, I decided to take action,” described Alag. He began placing matkas filled with water in his neighborhood, providing relief to the underprivileged and earning the affectionate title of the “Matka Man”.
The Matka Mission
“Every morning, I wake up at 4 a.m. and drive my modified Bolero, equipped with an 800-liter water tank, to refill between 70 to 100 matkas across South Delhi,” said Mr. Alag. These pots are strategically placed in areas frequented by laborers, rickshaw pullers, and other individuals who might not have access to clean drinking water. “The initiative is self-funded through my pension, life savings, and occasional donations from well-wishers. Despite receiving support, I remain independent, choosing not to affiliate with any NGO or government organization. We have almost a 100 matkas now.”
Beyond Water: A Holistic Approach
Alag’s commitment extends beyond providing water. He distributes seasonal fruits and vegetables to laborers, installs cycle pumps at matka stands for public use, and even provides glow-in-the-dark stickers for safety. His van, adorned with inspirational quotes from figures like Mahatma Gandhi and W.H. Auden, serves as both a vehicle for service and a moving message of hope and kindness.
Recognition and Impact
Alag’s selfless service has garnered widespread recognition. In 2021, industrialist Anand Mahindra lauded him on social media, describing him as “a superhero that’s more powerful than the entire Marvel stable.” Mahindra praised Alag for using his Bolero SUV as a tool for noble work, highlighting the profound impact of his simple yet powerful initiative. Till today, when people see him and recognise him, they rush to touch his feel. Mr. Alag says, “I hate to be a God or a Messiah to them, that’s not my intention. In fact I do this to share with them and treat them as equals.”
A Legacy of Compassion
Through his unwavering dedication, Alag Natarajan has transformed a simple act of kindness into a movement that continues to inspire countless individuals. He says to reporter, “The word charity to be used for my story, for me its more sharing.” His story is a testament to the power of compassion and the profound impact of selfless service. “The biggest threat to my work with the matkas is that alcoholics break loose on streets, vandalising them regularly and every year more than 60% matkas have to be replaced,” laughs Mr. Alag. As he continues his mission, one matka at a time, Alag reminds us that even the smallest acts of kindness can create ripples of change in the world.
