Plastic ‘Vaporized’ Process to Make Recycled Materials

September 7, 2024

A very innovative procedure chemically turns common plastic waste items in society into hydrocarbon building blocks for use in making new plastics.

Scientists behind the project say that this process works “equally well” with the two types of plastic waste produced by daily consumers: polyethylene, the component of the majority of single-use plastic bags, and polypropylene, of hard plastics, from microwavable dishes to luggage—which altogether are called polyolefins.

This process could help with the circular economy for throwback plastics as believed by the research team at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
