On June 12, 2025, tragedy struck mere moments after takeoff from Ahmedabad. Air India Flight AI 171, a Boeing 787‑8 bound for London Gatwick, crashed 32 seconds into the air, claiming the lives of 241 passengers and crew and causing significant ground casualties. Yet amid this devastation, one person emerged alive from the wreckage: Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a 40-year-old British national of Indian origin who was seated in emergency exit row 11A .


A Miracle Amid the Debris

Ramesh survived after his seat was ejected from the main fuselage upon impact, landing him outside the aircraft in a scene strewn with wreckage and tragedy. Shocked and injured, he managed to walk out, passing by the remains of those who did not survive. His escape, amid burning debris and bodies, has been described as nothing short of miraculous .

Among the 241 lives lost were 169 Indian citizens, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese, one Canadian, and the pilot-in-command, Dr. Nirali Sureshkumar Patel. Ramesh’s own brother was seated across from him and tragically did not survive .

The black box from the aircraft has been recovered, and investigations are underway.
