Weightlifter Mummy: How a 68-Year-Old Grandmother Found Strength, Joy, and Inspiration

September 23, 2025

At first glance, Roshni Devi Sangwan seemed like any ordinary grandmother. A housewife. Someone whose days were spent between household chores, watching TV serials, and attending satsangs. Life, as she remembers it, “was nothing much at this age.”
Then came the diagnosis: knee arthritis at 68. The doctor’s words were discouraging. “Mata ji, age ho gayi hai… ab thoda aram kijiye, stairs mat chadhiyega, thoda walking kar lijiye, satsang kariye.” Roshni’s world seemed to shrink overnight. “I felt like everything was over,” she recalls. “I thought I only had to wait for death.”

Her son, however, had a different vision. He suggested she join a gym. At first, she laughed, thinking he was joking. But one day, she stepped into the gym — in a salwar suit, surrounded by strangers lifting heavy weights. Fear gripped her. “People were looking at me. I didn’t belong here,” she says.

Yet, Roshni took that first step. And that step changed everything.
Today, she moves through her day with energy and joy. She plays with her grandchildren, completes her household tasks without fatigue, and embraces life with a newfound vigor. “A simple life,” she says, “is when you enjoy your daily work and still have energy left to play with your grandchildren.”

Her journey hasn’t just transformed her body — it’s transformed perceptions. People who once doubted a grandmother lifting weights now admire her. Videos of her workouts circulate online, inspiring countless others to challenge age stereotypes. She has become known as “Weightlifter Mummy”, proving that fitness isn’t limited by age — or clothing, or social expectations.

Arthritis also deepened her bond with her son, who now sees his mission as helping her become the fittest grandmother in India. Followers online share messages like, “You remind me of my mother,” and Roshni’s response is simple: motivation and gratitude. “When I look in the mirror now,” she says, “I see a strong, motivated woman with dreams, not limits.”
Her story is a gentle, powerful reminder: age is just a number. All it takes is the courage to take the first step — the rest will follow.

“Take the first step, and everything becomes easy,” she smiles. “You just have to believe in yourself.”
